Professional hydroplane racing runs on propellers that cost $10,000–$15,000 each, custom-forged steel, machined to tolerances measured in thousandths of an inch, and spun at over 4,000 RPM across a full racing season. When the season ends, protecting that investment through seven months of storage isn't optional. It's part of the job.
The H1 Unlimited season wraps at San Diego Bayfair, September 18–20, 2026. Within days of that final race, teams across the circuit begin the same off-season ritual. The same protocol applies across competitive offshore and hydroplane racing at every level, from APBA offshore and Super Boat International to regional hydroplane circuits with hundreds of boats nationwide. If you're running a performance prop, the storage requirements don't change.
Why the Prop Comes Off Immediately
Leaving a high-performance prop mounted through winter creates two specific failure risks:
- Hub seizure — moisture trapped between the prop hub and propshaft corrodes the interface, turning a routine spring removal into a destructive one
- Seal degradation — freeze-thaw cycles destroy the seals that keep water out of the hub assembly
For a prop that costs as much as a used car, neither is acceptable. The prop comes off within days of the final checkered flag.
The Winter Timeline
- Late September: Props pulled, cleaned, and prepped for transport to specialized prop shops
- October–November: Full servicing crack detection, pitch alignment verification, dynamic rebalancing. A prop even slightly out of pitch costs speed.
- December–May: Greased, cased, and stored in climate-controlled team shops until spring testing
Seven months. The prop that wins in May is the one that was protected in September.
The Case Problem: Props Are Awkward to Store
Wide blade spans, precision-machined hubs, surfaces that can't be scratched without affecting performance. Standard cases don't work. Most teams end up improvising — and improvised storage is how props get damaged.

Off-Season Storage Best Practices
- Clean before casing: salt, water, and debris accelerate corrosion on steel props. Wipe down completely and dry before sealing.
- Grease the hub: a light coat of marine grease on the hub bore prevents corrosion and makes spring installation clean
- Store hub-supported, not blade-tip down: use a case or rack that supports the hub, never the blades
- Climate-controlled if possible: a garage that stays above freezing is sufficient; a heated shop is better
- Label with specs: if you're running multiple props, label each case with pitch, diameter, and last service date
